  • Staircase Atrium: the mural painting finished in 1869 is worth seeing. An area where wooden tones are quite dominant.
  • Ivy Room: the surrounding nature echoes in this living room through plaster decorations illustrating climbing ivies.
  • Dining Room: the finishings in coarse cork, reminiscent of the cells of the Convent of Capuchos, are worth noting.
  • Gardens: displays a rich assortment of botanical specimens, such as camellias, rhododendrons and ferns. The Garden of Joina, the Arbor and the Chalet’s Labyrinth of Stone reveal a fond taste for scenic arrangement of elements.

1816 – Ferdinand II is born in Vienna.

1836 – Marriage of Queen Mary II of Portugal and Ferdinand II (King Consort).

1836 – Elise Hensler is born in Switzerland.

1853 – Death of Queen Mary II.

1853-55 – Regency is assumed by Ferdinand II until the acclamation of his son, King Peter V.

1860 – Soprano singer Elise Hensler performs at the São Carlos National Theatre in Lisbon. Ferdinand is captivated by her voice and beauty. Their mutual love for arts, culture, and botany brings them together.

1864-69 – Construction of the Chalet by Ferdinand II and Elise Hensler. The project of this alpine-inspired chalet is conceived by Elise.

1869 – Ferdinand II and Elise Hensler (now Countess of Edla) get married.

1885 – Death of Ferdinand II. His belongings and assets, including the Palace of Pena and the Moorish Castle, are left to the Countess of Edla. They were later purchased by the Portuguese Crown.

1999 – The Chalet is consumed by fire.

2007-2011 – Reconstruction works by Parks of Sintra.

2011 – Reopening to the public.
