1514 – Begining of construction during the reign of King Manuel I. Designed by Francisco de Arruda.

1520: The tower is completed serving to defend the entrance to the harbor.

1655: Functioned as a control point for merchant navigation and customs

1846: Restoration works

1865 – Installation of a beacon (until 1940)

1983: Classification by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
